Sts Peter & Paul’s Old Cathedral Restoration Project

Copywriting

Problem

The Sts Peters & Pauls Old Cathedral is celebrating it’s 150th anniversary in 2022. As the only greenstone Cathedral in Australia, it is a rare and precious gem.

However, it is in desperate need of repair and restoration.

The Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn initiated a community fundraising program to bring this treasured piece of history back to life. Not just to repair and restore it to it’s former glory, but to also enhance the surrounding precinct and create a haven of hope and love for pilgrims, parishioners, the local community and visitors.

The SPPOC committee needed help developing marketing collatoral to share the story of the Cathedral, create urgency around the need to protect and renew it, and give hope for the future. They had a local graphic design agency on board to create the visuals, but needed a writer to craft the compelling copy.

That is where I came in.

Solution

The SPOCC had a wealth of information about the history of the Cathedral, previous restoration activities and the program of renewal that the fundraising would support. There was a clear fundraising strategy and  examples of collateral produced for similar campaigns in the US.

The first step in the copy development process was to get together with the SPOCC committee chair and the graphic designer to map out the structure of the document and agree on the narrative and key messages.

Then I locked myself away for a few days and immersed myself in the material, pulling out the best bits to form the foundation of the copy.

The first draft of the copy was plugged into the visual design, and after a couple of revisions it was all finalised and signed off.

No doubt, the best part of the process was seeing my copy nestled amongst the images of such a beautiful and striking building.

Impact

The SPPOC has been successful in raising over $2 million from the community.
